Be prepared: email settings

Get email up and running on your iPhone quickly by taking down the details you need to know now

The iPhone is pretty much adept at everything, which means that email is second nature to it. Reading and replying to email is simple, so it makes sense to get your email settings written down now, so you can quickly start using your iPhone when it arrives.
What you need depends on your email account. The step-by-step guide below reveals what details you need and how to find them: just write them down and when you come to set up your email on the iPhone, click Settings followed by Mail, Calendar, Contacts and Add Account... to get started.

1 MOBILE ME

If you have a Mobile Me account, click this link. You’ll see a request for your member name, which is the email address you use to log on to your account, and password. You’ll need both of these when you come to set up your email on your iPhone.

2 GOOGLE MAIL

Click this link to access the login page. Make a note of your username – typically yourname@gmail.com or yourname@googlemail.com – and password that you ordinarily enter here, both of which you’ll need when you set up your email account on your iPhone.

3 AOL MAIL

You’ll need your AOL email address – such as yourname@aol.com or yourname@aol.co.uk and the password you use to log on to your AOL account on your computer. Make a note of these, ready for you to enter into your iPhone.

4 YAHOO

Click this link. Make a note of the details – your email address and password – that you use to log on here, which you’ll need to enter when setting up your account on your iPhone. Note: this step doesn’t apply to BT Yahoo users, who should follow the advice in steps five or six instead.

5 MICROSOFT OUTLOOK

account

If you use Microsoft Outlook to collect your email you’ll be able to transfer your email accounts across from this program to your iPhone simply by synchronising them through iTunes: just select your iPhone under Devices, switch to the Info tab and scroll down until you see an option marked “Sync selected mail accounts with Outlook”, Tick this followed by the account settings you wish to synchronise and click Apply to set up your mail accounts on your iPhone automatically.

6 WINDOWS MAIL

If you have another email account, you’ll need to make a note of a number of settings. Open Windows Mail or Outlook Express and select Accounts from the Tool menu. Select your email account and click Properties. All the details you need can be found on the Servers tab: write down everything you see: server type (POP3 or IMAP), incoming and outgoing mail servers, plus your email username and password.
