Be prepared: install iTunes
Number one on your checklist has to be installing the software that will enable you to get your iPhone up and running.
You’ll need a copy of Apple’s free iTunes software on your computer before you can use your iPhone for the first time. You’ll need to connect your iPhone to your computer using the supplied USB cable, at which point iTunes will recognise it and you’ll be able to activate your new phone and start using it. There are other advantages to using iTunes as well, as it enables you to synchronise data between your iPhone and computer, such as movies, music, contacts and even email accounts in some cases. Therefore it makes sense to download and install iTunes now as part of your preparation process.
Get iTunes
Apple Mac users will find that iTunes is already installed – you might want to check Software Update to see if the latest version is running, but otherwise you’re good to go.
PC users should visit the Apple web site by clicking this link. Click the Free Download link to choose the correct version for your PC. If you’re in any doubt, leave the first option selected. You don’t need to provide your email address at this stage, so just click Download Now to save the iTunes installer file to your hard drive. It’s a big file – 90MB – so make sure you’re connected to a fast broadband connection.
Once downloaded, just follow the simple step-by-step guide below to get it up and running.
1 INSTALL SOFTWARE
Double-click the iTunes installer file you downloaded, clicking Run and Continue if prompted. The setup wizard will launch – click Next at the first screen, read the licence agreement and select “I accept the terms in the license agreement” and click Next again.
2 SET LANGUAGE AND DEFAULT OPTIONS
At the next screen, you’ll be asked a number of questions. Untick any boxes you don’t agree with – for example, if you use another media player and don’t wish to make iTunes the default player for your music files, untick “Use iTunes as the default player for music files”. Select English (United Kingdom) from the Default iTunes Language drop-down menu and click Next again.
3 FINISH INSTALLATION
Wait while iTunes installs itself on your PC. When the program has finished installing, untick “Open iTunes after the installer exits” ticked and click Finish. We’ll be returning to iTunes a little later in the preparation process.
