Be prepared: prepare your music and video

Get your music collection ready for transferring to your iPhone

Did you know that the iPhone has the same functionality as the iPod Touch? That means it can double up as a portable music and video player, and one of the steps you should take while preparing for its arrival is to get your music collection in shape, ready for transferring across to your iPhone after it’s been connected to your computer for the first time.

Use iTunes

Everything is managed through iTunes on your computer: your iPhone synchronises with the libraries set up in iTunes, which means all you need to do is set things up accordingly. The step-by-step guide below reveals what you need to do – by the time your iPhone arrives, you’ll be ready to transfer your music collection across quickly and easily.

1 INITIAL SETUP

You’ll be prompted to set up your music library when you first launch iTunes after it’s been installed. It will offer to search for any music tracks on your computer and add them to its library: if you use Windows Media Player, the files will need to be converted first, which iTunes will do for you.

2 ADD MUSIC MANUALLY

account

If you prefer, you can add music tracks or albums manually in iTunes itself – perfect if you have a large collection of music on your PC. Open the File menu and select Add Folder to Library. Locate the folder containing the album you wish to add and click Select Folder. If prompted, click Convert to convert the music into a format supported by the iPhone.

3 ADD MUSIC FROM CD

account

To include music from CD in your iTunes collection, insert the disc in your computer. If an AutoPlay window pops up, choose the option to Import Songs using iTunes. If not, launch iTunes yourself and select the disc from under Devices. Tick those songs you wish to import and click Import CD.

4 CREATE PLAYLISTS

account

Playlists enable you to create your own compilation albums or simply play your favourite tunes without having to swap CDs. You can create this from your existing media library in iTunes: open the File menu and choose New Playlist. Give your playlist a name, then select Music and drag the tracks you wish to include in your playlist on to the playlist itself. This can then be synchronised with your iPhone, giving you ready access to your favourite tracks.
